Peyrafitte / Joris: Domopoetic Works
3 Zones + 1 Book = 2 Lives
Texte assemblé à l’occasion du finissage du 25 Novembre de l’exposition à la Galerie Simoncini.

— While Nicole Peyrafitte is perhaps best recognized for multimedia performance and Pierre Joris for his poetry and his work as a translator, this exhibition of individual works & collaborations presents the fullest measure of their art to date. This multidisciplinary & cross-genre exhibit features performance, installation, & a retrospective of recent works arrayed across three gallery levels.

— For the occasion of the exhibition, and to accent its synergetic élan, Editions Galerie Simoncini released their collaborative text The Book of U / Le livre des cormorans in both a bibliophile and a paperback edition.

— You may start or end with any of the three floors, though obviously coming in by the front door of the first floor today at 4 p.m. the visitor will be confronted with the last of a series of live performances during which Peyrafitte creates new action paintings while Joris reads from The Book of U / Le livre des cormorans, which, in fact, is translated and illustrated by Peyrafitte. In & through their creation, these “action  paintings” explore kinesthetic experience — the 6 created at the start of this exhibition, as well as several earlier ones, can be seen on this floor & from outside the gallery.

— In the basement floor’s “Domopoetic Zone” the visitor encounters Peyrafitte’s installation of Joris’ literary universe, a gathering & display of the complete set of his publications, which includes some sixty books & chapbooks published over the span of nearly fifty years. Juxtaposed to these volumes of poetry, essays, and translations are the artworks created by Peyrafitte for a number of the books since their first meeting in the late 1980s. Also displayed are twelve original videos on Joris’ life and work. Two armchairs invite the visitor to sit down & peruse a second set of Joris’ books &/or watch the videos.

— On the Second Floor a series of works — drawings, pastels on paper, carnets, & multi-media assemblages from 1995 to present — show the range of Peyrafitte’s graphic & painterly work, be that in complexly composed fold-out notebooks or in serial paintings such as the Bi-Valve & Bourg d’Oueil series or the earlier Bach Cantata suite. A few of these works also connote the collaboration between artist & poet.

Some Notes on Domopoetics:
If the current show is not an exhaustive view of Joris & Peyrafitte’s collaboration, it is however certainly the most complete such presentation to date — as far as visual work & poetry is concerned. What it leaves out is work related to such areas as live, improvisational music & language, & food. To help explain the term “domo-poetics” (from “domus,” latin for house, & “poetics” the art & act of making) here are its authors’ takes:

Domopoetics is our attempt at a practical synthesis & presentation of nearly three decades of shared artistic & domestic practices. The word was coined after returning from one of our long walks along the shore of Coney Island/Brighton Beach. That day we both wrote a text, and when we read it to each other we realized that they had totally different perspectives — Nicole wrote on the elements, Pierre on the people peopling them. The term domopoetics has grown to encompass all aspects of our artistic and domestic matters fueled by our rhizomatic motions & distinctive rhythms. If they contain oppositions & contradictions, these are never “solved” by dialectical Aufhebung (we are too Deleuzian for that) but domo-poetically transformed in the alchemy of loving collaboration into contraries, given that — as William Blake wrote — “without contraries there is no progression.”

Or, as we put it in the post-face to the Book of U / Le livre des cormorans:

*

Homage too & deep thanks to Ingrid Anders, André Simoncini & their team, without whose magnificent sense of hospitality — in a truly domo-poetic sense, i.e. a sense of hospitality that encompasses all aspects of art & life — none of this would have been possible.

Finissage Galerie Simoncini Saturday Nov 25th

Finissage Galerie Simoncini Saturday Nov 25th
Dad with Régine, his assistant, who came to visit my show in France in July 2016

Our 5-week show at la Galerie Simoncini in Luxembourg is coming to an end this weekend and we will have a grand finissage on Saturday Nov 25th with a performance at 4:00 pm.
This great run was deeply saddened by the sudden, though peaceful passing of my beloved 95 years old dad, Jean Peyrafitte, on November 11 2017 (press). We talked on Facetime almost everyday, so he got to follow me everywhere we went. I will miss him immensely and I don’t yet fully realize how much, but one thing he taught me is that the show must go on— gratefully and sans glitch! He had a beautiful sendoff ceremony and it was heart-warming to see the huge crowd who came to pay him their last respects. We are now on our way back to Luxembourg for the finissage.

In October Radio Tele Luxembourg came to tape a show that aired last weekend. Here is the link:

We are looking forward to see you at the finissage or, if coming to Luxembourg is not an option, visit our extensive documentation of the show here .

Amazing week (preparing, setting up, installing) and uplifting weekend (painting, reading, performing) at the Simoncini Gallery in Luxembourg. We had a three-day opening party during which we nomadically performed our collaborations moving across the three floors of the exhibition.

At the lower level we have installed a complete set of Pierre Joris’ publications — about 60 books & chapbooks moving between poetry, essays & translations. The earliest publications date from 1969; in 1990 begins the years of our collaborations: it includes art work I created for Pierre’s books & videos (12 are available at the galerie) on Pierre’s life & work.
The readings at that level thus focused on our Domopoetics world. The readings on the 1st floor (or 2nd floor in the US!) focused on my recent books & carnets as exhibited there. The performance on the ground level was dedicated to live Action Paintings — I made 5 this weekend! — with Pierre reading from The Book Of U, his new book of poems published by Editions Simoncini with my translation and illustrations for the limited edition.

On Friday Man’ok performed on bass with us. On Saturday & Sunday Pierre DJ’d sound files by earlier collaborators Holland Hopson & Michael Bisio.

So far this has been a truly superb experience for us and, we hope, for the many visitors, from old friends to the people who came in because they saw the action in progress from the street.

The show will run until November 26 and a few more Actions will occur.

With many thanks to André Simoncini & Ingrid Anders and their incredible team of collaborators who made it possible.

Summing up & Coming up

Above is a 3 minutes résumé of Nicole & Pierre’s last three months!
Thank you so much to all the friends we met, reconnected, showed & performed with  during May June July 2015 — they were truly inspiring times!
